How to Keep Moths Out of Your Closet

We all know the frustration of pulling out your favourite jumper only to find it damaged with holes. The culprit? Clothes moth larvae. If you want to prevent any more damage to your garments, here’s how to keep moths out of your closet and out of your clothes.

Why are moths in my clothes?

Moths lay their eggs in cool, dark and undisturbed areas, and more often than not this will be your closet. Not only do they look for the perfect climate, but they also look for natural fibres for feed, namely animal based fibres like wool, cashmere, silk, soft leather, and fur. Why? Animal based fibres contain keratin, an essential nutrients for moth larvae to grow into an adult moth. Keratin is also found in human hair and skin – which can found in dust around the house and is equally attractive to clothes moths.

Check on your spare bedroom and attic.

Because attics and spare bedrooms are the least likely to be disturbed, these are usually the most common homes of moth larvae. Perspiration also attracts female moths laying their eggs, things like human sweat, strong scents and drinks spilling on clothing.

How to keep moths out of your natural fibres

To reduce the risk of moth larvae making a meal of your sweaters, make sure to only put clean clothing back in your closet. If you don’t wash your garment, still keep it on a hanger and air for 24-48 hours outside of the closet before you put it away.

Consider also dry cleaning your clothes on the regular. This can also remove any larvae already on the clothes – but make sure to notify your dry cleaner before handing it over.

Getting rid of larvae

Washing your clothes won’t necessarily kill all the larvae, unless you put it on the warmest setting. If you have spotted them, vacuum and wipe out the cupboards and put the affected clothing in the freezer. A week or two in the freezer will kill all larvae and eggs and you’ll then be able to wash, dry and rehang your garment.

React quickly

With the right conditions an adult moth can form in a little less than a month, while cooler or less humid climates lead to these moths staying at the larval stage for two years or more if left undisturbed. And remember, the larvae are the most dangerous to your garments, so this means you could have larvae infested garments for up to two years. As soon as you spot those clear holes in your clothes, start the process to remove them as soon as possible.
